What is fair trade?
Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – especially in developing regions.
Fair Trade organisations have a clear commitment to Fair Trade as the principal core of their mission. They, backed by consumers, are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.
How do I know my products have been produced ethically?
LOCWOM Australia has an extremely close relationship with Local Women’s Handicrafts, their partner fair trade textile and handicraft collective in Kathmandu, Nepal. We maintain transparency across our brand so that each buyer knows who made their clothes. Bianca, the founder, spent 3 months in Nepal spending time at the women’s centre, observing the manufacturing process, interviewing the women and documenting their stories. LWH commits to paying above living wage to their employees while providing a fun, safe and fair working environment where every woman feels equal.
What is a social enterprise?
Social enterprises are businesses that trade to intentionally tackle social problems, improve communities, provide people access to employment and training, or help the environment.
Using the power of the marketplace to solve the most pressing societal problems, social enterprises are commercially viable businesses existing to benefit the public and the community, rather than shareholders and owners. (http://www.socialtraders.com.au/)
How does LOCWOM Australia act as a social enterprise?
Aside from our partnership with Local Women’s Handicrafts, who employ 35 women from marginalised backgrounds, LOCWOM Australia invests a percentage of our profits back into community projects through LOCWOM, a public benefit Non-Profit Organisation with the intention of improving the lives of women and children globally through education, training and mentoring programs.
Is the material of your products ethically sourced?
Our kaftans are made using recycled materials discarded from factories or collected from recycled saris. Unfortunately we can’t always trace back to the origins of the silk but we do our best to create a waste free environment and stop these materials from otherwise ending up in landfill.
Can I buy the products in a store or market?
LOCWOM Australia frequents markets throughout Sydney. You can see latest dates on our markets page.
Can I support your cause without making a purchase?
